The BFS Los Angeles Symposium is an essential one-day event designed to empower Black filmmakers in transitioning from shorts to larger formats, including features, television, and branded content. With its central theme, "Graduating From Shorts," the symposium offers a platform for creators to gain invaluable insights, strategies, and connections crucial for navigating the industry landscape.
Through a series of skill enhancing sessions and community building, participants are equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to amplify their short films into stepping stones toward broader opportunities in the entertainment industry.

HOW TO BREAK INTO WRITING PROGRAMS & FELLOWSHIPS
During this presentation, Shannan E. Johnson (The Syfy Channel, Screencraft) will provide strategic tips on how to craft compelling applications and increase their chances of success in the world of screenwriting.

Shannan E. Johnson is a former development and current programming executive at The Syfy Channel (Being Human, Haven, Warehouse 13) turned CEO of The Professional Pen (TPP), a script consultancy. TPP develops screenwriters from idea to pitch to become more confident storytellers prepared for a professional screenwriting career and consults with scripted film and TV teams to streamline their development process to get them to pre-production more efficiently.
TPP offers writing services that hone the key skills to develop an effective writing process: understanding screenplay structure, outlining, and giving, receiving, and addressing notes. Navigating the World of Film Festivals
This panel features Tari Wariebi (Director of BAFTA winning short We Were Meant To), Stacey Marbey (Program Manager, Artist and Critics Academies at Film at Lincoln Center, Irene Soriano (Sundance Short Programmer) & Noel Braham (Emmy Nominated Fillmmaker, Founder & Co-Director of the Micheaux Film Festival). Attendees learn how to strategically select, submit to, and maximize opportunities at film festivals, ultimately enhancing their exposure and networking within the industry.

An award-winning filmmaker, Tari Wariebi’s work has screened in over 60 film festivals. Tari’s work as a director, writer, and producer has afforded him the opportunities to create original content for various media platforms, such as VEVO, Vice, Goodwill Industries, and Vogue, garnering millions of views for these platforms. Most recently, Tari has been developing his feature film WE WERE MEANT TO for his BAFTA-winning and Oscar-qualifying short.

Stacey Marbrey, a California native, is a seasoned film festival programmer with a talent for curating compelling content and forging industry partnerships. With experience programming for renowned festivals like the San Francisco International Film Festival, San Francisco Black Film Festival, the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, and the Slamdance Film Festival, she brings a deep understanding of the festival landscape.
As the former Program Director for the U.S. Global Cultural Initiative, working alongside prestigious organizations including the NEA, NEH, and UNESCO, Stacey played a pivotal role in shaping cultural dialogues and fostering international exchanges. Her efforts laid the groundwork for initiatives such as Sundance Institute’s FILM FORWARD, earning her the International Engagement Award at The White House.
A graduate of San Francisco State University's School of Cinema, Stacey's producing credits include collaborations with filmmakers Sofia Coppola (LICK THE STAR), Cauleen Smith (DRYLONGSO), and Himanshu Malik (CHITRAKUT). She serves as an advisor for the South Asia Forum for Art & Creative Heritage and is a member of the ERA Equal Voice Equal Future Editorial Board. Currently, she is the residing the Program Manager for the Artist and Critics Academies at Film at Lincoln Center.

Irene Soriano is a Los Angeles-based writer, film programmer, and independent film curator. She programs short films for the Sundance Film Festival and has also worked with AFI Fest and the Outfest Fusion QTBIPOC Film Festival.
In 2003, Irene became Film Independent/Project Involve’s first Fellow, establishing a Film Programming Industry Track. In 2022, she moderated a podcast about diversity, equity, and inclusion in film programming for DOC Leipzig with the Programmers of Colour Collective. Additionally, Irene curated an art and film exhibition for Outfest’s LGBTQ+ arts and virtual media OUTMUSEUM titled “The Filipinx Edition: Queer and Trans Visions from Women and Non-Binary Artists,” launched during Filipinx American History Month.
Currently, Irene serves as the Lead Curator for the I SEE YOU Independent Queer Filipinx Short Film Microcinema in Los Angeles.

Noel Braham is a writer, director, and producer who was previously nominated for two Daytime Emmy awards for his short film, WATCHTOWER - Outstanding Special Class Directing and Outstanding Special Class Short Format Programming. The project also screened at the 73rd Cannes Film Festival (Shorts Corner).
A survivor of homelessness, and stark advocate for disenfranchised communities, Noel uses his creative platform to weave elements of social justice into his work, as well as using his voice to diversify traditional landscapes into his own world view. This concept will be best realized in his upcoming feature film debut ANGEL CITY, a drama about an up-and-coming actor navigating the cutthroat world of the entertainment industry while grappling with the looming specter of homelessness. The film is currently in post-production.
Noel’s philanthropic accolades include the role as founder and co-director of the Micheaux Film Festival, which under his leadership, in 2021, made headlines as the first film festival to successfully return to theaters on the West Coast since the covid-19 shutdown.
The festival has honored actors and filmmakers like Robert Townsend, Brenda Gilbert, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Steven Caple Jr. Noel has been featured in Forbes, Deadline and Black Enterprise for his work with the multicultural film festival.
Noel lives by the belief, “Our self-image is so powerful, it unwittingly becomes our destiny,” - a quote from
Oscar Micheaux and a testament to Noel’s philosophy.

Monty Marsh is a multi-talented entrepreneur, artist, writer, director, and producer with a deep passion for storytelling and innovation. Monty's experience packaging projects, employing creative financing, and negotiating deals has proven invaluable in his work across the industry.
He has worked his way up from production assistant to become an award-winning director and producer, with a particular focus on commercials, branded content, and film. Monty is a Commercial Directors Diversity Program Fellow and his groundbreaking work includes directing and co-producing YouTube's first live 360 performance.

David Kilian has been producing and representing directors in the commercial and brand spaces for the past 8 years. Starting his career at the award-winning post production house, Whitehouse Post, David has helped launch and shape the advertising careers of some of the most respected and sought after voices in the media landscape.
In addition to his producing work, David has a passion for advocating and championing underrepresented voices in the storytelling spaces, working alongside organizations such as SHINY and AICP to make sure all perspectives and lived experiences are heard and represented in commercials and branded content.

Araeia (a-ray-uh) is a Philly bred, LA based director, writer and graduate of Temple University's School of Film & Media Arts. Heavily influenced by hippie parents and the rich music scene of her hometown— her soulful narrative style centers the power, beauty and intersectional experiences of women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and all underrepresented communities. She is most passionate about showcasing the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Araeia earned her stripes production managing and her wheelhouse ranges from creative brand development to directing commercials, films and music videos. She has worked with global brand leaders at Google, Coke, Jordan Brand, Vogue, Shea Moisture, Paramount+ and more. Her social-political thriller Val-En-Tina starring Emmy nominated Jon Lindstrom (True Detective) was an official selection for Les Femmes Underground Int’l Film Festival and Official Latino Short Film Festival. Araeia is also an alum of the AICP and DGA sponsored CDDP Fellowship Program.
Her latest work celebrates the creative power of Coco Gauff, Lupita Nyong’o and Erykah Badu. Araeia is currently developing a slate of TV and feature films that range from dark comedies to elevated thrillers. Her mission is to create transformative stories that allow all women and BIPOC characters to be their fullest, most three dimensional selves.

Jay Cougan, a creative producer at Tongal, collaborates with renowned clients like Sony Pictures Entertainment, Roku, Cirque du Soleil, and others to produce innovative branded content that captivates audiences worldwide. With six years of immersive experience spanning pre-production, diverse on-set roles, and post-production tasks including editing and sound design, Jay brings a wealth of industry knowledge to their work. Currently, they're exploring the journey of bringing ideas to life on screen, particularly within the realm of branded content and their role at Tongal.
Driven by an unwavering belief that "Storytelling has the potential to change the world," Jay champions the idea that through globalizing storytellers, we can work towards better cross-cultural understanding for a future led by human-centric connection. Finding fulfillment in amplifying the voices of others in order to bring new stories to life, they aspire to catalyze positive change within branded content and beyond by sharing insights, offering support, and guiding filmmakers toward success.
Outside of work, Jay can be found in a movie theater (their happy place), shooting pinball, hiking, or hyper-focusing on their latest random interest, whether that's birdwatching, coding, or attempting to play music after a decade of picking up the camera instead of the guitar.
Strategies for Entering Television Directing
Featuring Directors Letia Solomon (Station 19), Thembi Banks (Insecure, YOUNG.WILD.FREE.), & Katrelle Kindred (Snowfall, A League Of Their Own). This panel provides emerging directors with practical insights into breaking into the competitive world of television. Attendees gain valuable strategies for building their portfolios and positioning themselves for directing opportunities in the dynamic landscape of television production.

Letia Solomon is a former chemical engineer turned award-winning director based in Los Angeles. Letia is a Directing Fellow of the 2023-24 DET Directing Program, 2022 Tribeca x CHANEL Through Her Lens Program and Netflix’s 2023 Episodic Directors on the Rise class led by Paris Barclay.
She holds an MFA in TV & Film Production from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and has made her television directorial debut on Season 7 of ABC/ABC Signature’s STATION 19.

Thembi Banks is an award-winning writer/director from Harlem, New York. Her directing work includes episodes of INSECURE and THE SEX LIVES OF COLLEGE GIRLS and the 2023 Sundance film, YOUNG.WILD.FREE. She wrote on the Emmy nominated series, ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING.

Currently, Shakira Hedgpeth serves as an agent at the Kaplan Stahler Agency, primarily working with writers and directors from underrepresented backgrounds. Prior to joining the agency, she worked as a manager and producer at Kronicle Media. Where she developed projects with GET LIFTED, SPRINGHILL ENT, Netflix, and Prentice Penny. Her passion for storytelling was nurtured while previously working on the NBC Current Programming team. Where she worked to manage the day-to-day logistics for the development and production slate. She oversaw CHICAGO FIRE and THE BLACKLIST and received the NBC Gem Award for her stewardship of the internal diversity and inclusion initiative. Additionally, she served as a Creative Executive at TV ONE and CLEO TV Networks exclusively working on a slate of documentaries and original films.
Over the past decade, Hedgpeth has contributed to launching a new network, commissioned scripts for film, and oversaw production for over 500 hours of scripted programming for cable and broadcast. Providing scripted programming support has ultimately led her to discover that she finds some of her greatest fulfillment in serving as a creative catalyst and amplifying the voices of diverse creatives.

Xosha Roquemore is best known for her role as "Tamra" on THE MINDY PROJECT. She also starred in Ava DuVernay’s series CHERISH THE DAY on OWN and recurred in the Showtime series' BLACK MONDAY and I’M DYING UP HERE. Xosha guest starred on Ava Duvernay’s Netflix limited series COLIN IN BLACK AND WHITE and recurred on BET+’s FIRST WIVES CLUB. She is currently shooting a series regular role on Mara Brock Akil’s upcoming Netflix series, FOREVER.
In film, Xosha will be leading opposite Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford in Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD directed by Julius Onah, set to release in 2025. She was most recently seen in Chelsea Peretti’s directorial debut FIRST TIME FEMALE DIRECTOR and Netflix holiday movie FAMILY SWITCH directed by McG and starring Jennifer Garner. Prior to this, Xosha can also be seen in SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY directed by Malcolm D. Lee, WHO INVITED CHARLIE directed by Xavier Manrique and LET'S GET MERRIED executive produced by Eva Longoria. Her other film credits include BRIAN BANKS directed by Tom Shadyac, THE DISASTER ARTIST directed by James Franco, and ALL NIGHTER in which she acted alongside J.K Simmons and Emile Hirsch. Xosha first grabbed audiences and the industry's attention with her performance in the acclaimed drama PRECIOUS directed by Lee Daniels.
Xosha trained in acting at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

Angela Lewis has garnered many roles; from some of the most illustrious off-Broadway play productions, to award-winning drama television series. Angela is most known for playing the dynamic and polarizing 'Aunt Louie' in all six seasons of the FX series, "Snowfall", co-created by the late award-winning director, John Singleton. She recently wrapped playing one of the leads in the world premiere of Kristen Adele Calhoun's poetic and empowering play, BLACK CYPRESS BAYOU, at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.
Born and raised in Detroit, she majored in theater at the University of Michigan and in 2011 landed a role in La Jolla Playhouse's production of MILK LIKE SUGAR, where she met co-actor and husband-to-be J. Mallory McCree. Her first television role was on the Showtime series THE BIG C opposite Laura Linney, which opened the door to a growing on-camera career including guest starring on LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT.
Newly married and moving to Los Angeles in 2014, Angela booked back-to-back guest starring roles on TNT's THE LAST SHIP and CBS's CODE BLACK before landing her series regular role on SNOWFALL. Since becoming a mother to her first child in 2019, Lewis co-founded BlüRemedi Media, a production company that illuminates the vast diversity within diversity. Committed to giving back and the uplifting of Black (and Brown) people, Angela has also co-founded the non-profit Moon Child Collaborative which houses her first initiative, Birth Village, a platform for the annihilation of the Black Maternal Health crisis by raising awareness, educating, advocating, and providing access to resources for Black (and of color) women, families, and workers in the birth space. Most recently, in 2023, Angela became a mother for the second time. Her beautiful at home birth experience has inspired a deeper commitment to Black and other marginalized birthing persons to have an equally joyous birth journey.

A renowned cultural critic and writer with a focus on issues of race, gender, and sexuality, Jamilah Lemieux is a leading millennial feminist thinker, influencer, and game-changing media maverick. Her written work has been featured via a host of print and digital platforms, including Vanity Fair, the Los Angeles Times, the Nation, Essence, Refinery 29, Playboy, Self, Wired, the Guardian, Colorlines, the Washington Post and the Columbia Journalism.
Review. She is also a weekly contributor to Slate’s ‘Care and Feeding’ parenting column and co-host of the publication’s Care and Feeding podcast. An important voice in the construction of
the Black feminist blogosphere of the early twenty-first century, Lemieux formerly served as the Vice President of News and Men’s Programming for iOne Digital and as the Senior Editor for
EBONY magazine She penned the forward for the Verso anniversary edition of Michele Wallace’s Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman and the 2017 re-release of Ann
Petry’s Miss Muriel and Other Stories. A native of Chicago, Lemieux has provided news and cultural commentary for CNN, ABC,
CBS, and MSNBC. She has been featured on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Desus and Mero, as well
as Lifetime’s critically acclaimed, Surviving R. Kelly and Surviving R. Kelly 2: The Reckoning and A+E’s Secrets of Playboy.
Lemieux served as a producer and commentator for the docu-series Time of Essence, which told the story of Essence Magazine. She is currently working on her first book, Baby Mama’s Day: A Black
