“In 2019 I wanted to give up on filmmaking after toiling away for years with failed scripts. Then I learned about the Black Film Space screenwriting workshop. I took a leap of faith, drove from my home in Delaware to the workshop in NYC, and hoped for the best.

When I arrived, I was a little nervous. But once I crossed the threshold, I saw the room was filled with brilliant black faces, and I immediately felt at home. The support and love in that workshop was unlike any other I’ve experienced. It was in that room where the seeds were planted for my film, Midnight Oil, which became an Official Selection at the Blackstar Film Festival in 2020.

Black Film Space saved my filmmaking career.”

“When I think of Black Film Space the word ‘community’ immediately comes to mind. TV and Film is a tough industry to break into so we need folks to support us on that journey. I’m happy to report that I’ve found genuine friends through Black Film Space who want to see me succeed as I do them. We read and critique each other’s scripts, brainstorm together, do table reads, and the like. We’re even willing to hold the boom mic for each other’s shorts. That, to me, has been the most valuable takeaway.”

"In Summer of 2016, I was scrolling on Instagram and came across the the first Black Film Space mixer flyer the day of, and luckily grabbed one of the few last tickets before they sold out. As the evening went on, I met Director Taquan Pugh and I shared with him I love to shoot as long it’s a script ready to go. Taquan then brought me on as a cinematographer for his series Deliver Our Love. While filming that series, Taquan casted amazing talent and crew, who were also members of Black Film Space. I was happy to know we were on our way securing a rolodex that echoed our culture. Since joining, Black Film Space connected me to jobs, resources, and people i would have had a tougher time discovering."
